What changes from ICO to BMP

QualityNothing lost: BMP keeps every pixel
TransparencyTransparent areas are filled with white
Colour depthSaved at 8 bits per channel
File sizeUsually larger: BMP compresses less tightly than ICO

When to use BMP: Older Windows software, simple paint programs and tools that expect raw, uncompressed pixels.

The two formats

.ico

Windows icon

The Windows icon format. One file bundles the same picture at several sizes, such as 16, 32 and 256 pixels square, so the system can pick the right one.

About ICO files

.bmp

BMP imageWindows Bitmap

Microsoft’s bitmap format from the early days of Windows. It usually stores pixels uncompressed, so quality is exact but files are large.

Questions

How do I convert ICO to BMP?

Drop your ICO file on this page, or choose it. Anyfile converts it on your device in a moment and the BMP downloads straight away. To change it first, open it in the photo editor.

Is my ICO file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted by your own browser, and nothing is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to Network, and convert a file. No upload appears.

What happens to transparent areas?

BMP can’t hold transparency, so they’re filled with white.

Can I convert several ICO files at once?

Yes. Drop them together and you get one ZIP with every BMP inside.
