Free alternative
A free Convertio alternative
An online file converter covering 300+ formats across audio, video, images, documents, archives, presentations, fonts and ebooks, with OCR and an API. Anyfile is a free alternative for many of the same jobs: it opens, edits and converts files in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Convertio and Anyfile, side by side
| Convertio | Anyfile | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free tier: no charge. Lite, the cheapest paid plan: $11.99 a month billed monthly, or $6.99 a month billed yearly (1 GB maximum file size, 1,000 conversion credits a month). Basic is $22.99 a month (3 GB, 3,000 credits) and Pro $44.99 a month (10 GB, 10,000 credits) billed monthly. Amounts were shown in US dollars when checked. Source | Free, funded by optional donations |
| Free version | Yes. Convertio’s terms describe a free tier that lets you evaluate the service, with subscription plans for larger files and more concurrent conversions. Source | Everything is free |
| Free limits | Its Terms of Use give the free tier as a maximum single file size of 100 MB, 2 concurrent conversions and 10 conversion minutes in a 24-hour period (and 10 recognised pages for OCR). The homepage upload box currently shows a 1 GB maximum file size, and the terms still list older paid plan names, so the two pages differ; check the limit shown when you convert. Source | No daily limits; size limits per kind of file (for example 100 MB pictures, 300 MB PDFs) |
| Are files uploaded? | Yes. Files travel from your browser to Convertio’s server and its conversion hosts over a TLS-encrypted channel, and each conversion runs in a separate sandboxed environment. Convertio says its own team cannot access your files and that its infrastructure is based in Germany. Source | No: files are opened and converted in your browser |
| How long files are kept | Input files and temporary files are deleted instantly after conversion. Output files are deleted after 24 hours, or sooner if you delete them yourself from My Files. Source | Never stored: nothing is uploaded |
| Account needed | Not for free conversions: Convertio says you can use it free of charge without sharing personal information, and that registering is something to decide on once you reach the free-tier limit. Source | No |
| Ads | The pricing page lists “Adfree pages” among the features included with its paid plans. Source | None |
| Platforms | Browser-based and works on all platforms, with no software to install. A conversion API is also offered for developers. Source | Any current browser on a computer, tablet or phone; installable as an app |
| Formats | More than 300 file formats and more than 25,600 different conversions, with audio, video, image, document, archive, presentation, font and ebook converters. Source | 202 file extensions in 17 editors, with 639 one-click conversions |

When Convertio is the better choice
Convertio is the better choice when you need a format Anyfile does not open, OCR on scanned documents, files larger than Anyfile’s size limits, or an API to automate conversions. Anyfile suits one-off conversions and edits where the file should stay on your device.
