How to convert a WebP picture to JPG

Drop the WebP picture on Anyfile’s WebP to JPG converter and the JPG downloads a moment later, in any current browser, with nothing to install. On a Mac, Preview can export WebP as JPEG; on Windows, Paint can save it as a JPEG once WebP support is installed.

Open the WebP to JPG converter

Step by step

  1. Open the converter

Go to WebP to JPG. It works in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on a computer, a tablet or a phone.

  2. Drop the picture on the page

Drag the .webp file onto the drop card, or click Choose files and pick it. You can drop twenty at once.

  3. Find the JPG in your downloads

It converts on your device straight away. When the card says Converted to JPG, the file is in your downloads, with the same name ending in .jpg. Several pictures come together in one ZIP.

  4. Pick PNG when there’s transparency

JPG can’t hold see-through areas, so a WebP logo or sticker gets a white background. To keep them, use WebP to PNG instead.

An animated WebP becomes a still JPG of its first frame, because JPG can’t move. To keep the animation, open it in the photo editor and download it as an animated GIF, the format it suggests: browsers can’t write animated WebP, so GIF is what travels.

Why did you get a WebP at all? Websites prefer it because it’s smaller than JPG at the same quality, so a picture you save from a page often arrives as .webp even if it started life as a photo. Converting it back doesn’t bring back detail the website’s version never had.

Nothing is uploaded: your browser reads the file and makes the new one on your device. See how it works, and how to check.

Other ways to do it

On a Mac. Open the picture in Preview, choose File › Export, set Format to JPEG, pick a quality and click Save. Recent versions of macOS read WebP without anything extra.

On Windows. Open the picture in Paint and choose File › Save as › JPEG picture. Paint reads WebP once Microsoft’s free WebP Image Extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store, and many PCs have them already.

In an image editor you already use. Most current editors open WebP and export JPG through their Export or Save As menu. That’s the better route when you’re retouching the picture anyway.

When Anyfile is quicker

For one picture on your own Mac, Preview is just as quick. The converter wins for a batch (drop them all, get one ZIP), on a Chromebook or a borrowed computer, and on a Windows PC where Paint won’t open WebP and you can’t install anything.

Questions

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

A little, as any JPG does, because the picture is compressed again, at high quality. You won’t see a difference at normal sizes. For a picture you’ll keep editing, PNG keeps every pixel.

What happens to transparent parts?

JPG has no transparency, so they’re filled with white. Convert to PNG to keep them see-through.

Can I convert WebP on my phone?

Yes. Open the converter in Safari or Chrome, tap Choose files and pick the picture from Photos or Files. The JPG is saved to your downloads.

Is the picture uploaded?

No. It’s converted by your browser, on your device, and never sent to a server.
