Guide

How to remove the location from a photo

Drop the photo on Anyfile’s Remove location page and a copy without the GPS location downloads at once, keeping the date, the camera and the picture itself. It works on JPG and HEIC photos from iPhones, Android phones and cameras; HEIC photos are saved as JPG.

Remove location from a photo

Step by step

  1. Open the tool

Go to Remove location from a photo. For HEIC photos, use Chrome, Edge or Safari, which can decode them.

  2. Drop the photos

Drag one or more photos onto the drop card, or click Choose files. Each is cleaned as soon as it lands.

  3. Share the clean copy

When the card says Done, the copy is in your downloads. Share that one, and keep the original if you want to remember where it was taken.

  4. Remove everything else too

To take out the camera details as well, drop the photo on the JPG page, choose Edit file, open the arrow next to Download and set Camera info to Remove all.

What’s removed: the GPS block and its values, which hold the latitude, longitude and often the altitude and direction. The embedded thumbnail goes too, because it could still show the photo before any edits. What stays: the date and time, the camera or phone model, the exposure settings and the picture itself.

Where it matters: many social networks remove location from photos you post, but email attachments, photos sent as files, cloud links and AirDrop usually keep it. A photo of your front door with its location intact says exactly where you live.

Nothing is uploaded: your browser reads the file and makes the new one on your device. See how it works, and how to check.

Other ways to do it

On an iPhone. In Photos, select the picture, tap Share, then Options at the top, and switch off Location before you send it. It only applies to that share; the photo in your library keeps its location.

On Windows. Right-click the photo in File Explorer, choose Properties › Details, then Remove Properties and Personal Information. You can remove chosen fields or make a cleaned copy.

On a Mac. Open the photo in Preview, choose Tools › Show Inspector, open the GPS tab and click Remove Location Info, then save.

Stop it at the source. Turning off location for the camera in your phone’s privacy settings means new photos don’t record it at all.

When Anyfile is quicker

For one photo on an iPhone, the share sheet’s Options is quickest. Anyfile is quicker for a batch, for HEIC photos you want as JPGs anyway, and on a computer where you don’t want to dig through properties dialogs.

Questions

Does removing the location change the picture?

No. The photo is saved again as a JPG at high quality, upright, with only the location and the old thumbnail taken out.

Does it work on HEIC photos?

Yes, in Chrome, Edge and Safari. The clean copy is saved as a JPG, because nothing in a browser can write HEIC.

How can I check the location is gone?

Open the copy in your computer’s photo viewer and look at its details or info panel: there should be no GPS coordinates or map.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It’s cleaned in your browser, on your device; the location never leaves it.
