Guide
How to open draw.io and Mermaid diagrams
Drop a .drawio file on Anyfile’s diagram editor to see every page and change shapes, labels and arrows; drop a Mermaid file and its text appears beside the drawing, redrawn as you type. Either can be saved again or as an SVG or PNG picture.
Step by step
Open the diagram
Drop the file on the diagram editor, or on the draw.io or Mermaid page and choose Edit file. Mermaid files end in .mermaid or .mmd.
Change a draw.io diagram
Click a shape to select it and drag to move it; double-click to edit its label in place. The Arrow tool connects two shapes, and the arrows follow them when they move. Fill, outline and text colours, dashed lines and arrow ends can all be changed for what’s selected. Pages can be added, renamed and deleted.
Change a Mermaid diagram
Edit the text, and the drawing beside it is redrawn as you type. If a line has a mistake, it’s pointed out by line number while the last working drawing stays in view.
Save it, or save a picture
Press Download to save the diagram in its own format. To put it in a document or a slide, open the arrow next to Download and choose an SVG or PNG picture.
A draw.io file keeps everything you don’t change: each shape keeps its style settings, and the file opens again in draw.io as before. Shapes from stencils Anyfile doesn’t know are drawn as plain boxes, though their details are kept.
Mermaid covers flowcharts, sequence, class, state and entity-relationship diagrams, Gantt charts, pie charts, mind maps and timelines, drawn by Mermaid itself. PNG pictures are saved at twice the size, so they stay sharp on slides.
Nothing is uploaded: your browser reads the file and makes the new one on your device. See how it works, and how to check.
Other ways to do it
draw.io itself. The draw.io desktop app and diagrams.net in the browser are free and open .drawio files with every stencil. The best choice for building big diagrams from scratch.
Mermaid’s live editor. The Mermaid project’s own live editor shows the drawing as you type and exports pictures, much like the text view here.
GitHub and Markdown. GitHub draws Mermaid written in a code block marked mermaid inside a Markdown file, so a diagram in a README needs no picture at all.
When Anyfile is quicker
Anyfile is quicker for opening a diagram someone sent, fixing a label, or getting an SVG for a document, without signing in or installing anything. For long sessions building complex diagrams, draw.io’s own app has more shapes.
Questions
Can I edit a Mermaid diagram by dragging shapes?
No. Mermaid diagrams are edited as text; the drawing follows the text. draw.io diagrams are edited by dragging.
Does it open every page of a draw.io file?
Yes, compressed or not, and pages can be added, renamed and deleted.
Which other diagram formats open?
Excalidraw, BPMN, GraphML, Visio .vsdx and Graphviz files open in the same editor.
Is my diagram uploaded?
No. It’s opened, drawn and saved by your browser, on your device.
