When to use MD: Read-me files, documentation, notes and writing for the web.

The two formats

.docm

Word document with macros

A Word document that contains VBA macros. Since Word 2007, ordinary .docx files cannot hold code, so documents with macros use this separate extension.

Documents with automated steps, such as mail-merge helpers or custom forms.

Opens in Word; LibreOffice Writer (macros may not run)

About DOCM files

.md

Markdown file

Plain text with light symbols for formatting, such as # for headings and * for emphasis. John Gruber created Markdown in 2004 with Aaron Swartz; CommonMark now specifies it precisely.

Read-me files, documentation, notes and writing for the web.

Opens in VS Code, Obsidian, Typora, GitHub, any text editor

Questions

How do I convert DOCM to MD?

Drop your DOCM file on this page, or choose it. Anyfile converts it on your device in a moment and the MD downloads straight away. To change it first, open it in the document editor.

Is my DOCM file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted by your own browser, and nothing is sent to a server. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, go to Network, and convert a file. No upload appears.

Can I convert several DOCM files at once?

Yes. Drop them together and you get one ZIP with every MD inside.
